Yakushima 屋久島

Yakushima is a mystical island located off the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan, renowned as a “land of forests and water.”

It is one of Japan’s earliest designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites and is widely known as an inspiration for《Princess Mononoke》by Hayao Miyazaki. 🧚🏻

🌿 Core Feature: Ancient Thousand-Year Forests

  • Yakusugi: Refers to cedar trees over 1,000 years old. The most famous, Jōmon Sugi, is estimated to be up to 7,200 years old.
  • Moss Forests: Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge is covered in lush green moss, creating an almost otherworldly, spiritual atmosphere.
  • Vertical Ecosystem: With peaks nearing 2,000 meters (often called the “Alps on the Ocean”), the island hosts vegetation ranging from subtropical to subalpine climates, resulting in remarkable biodiversity.

🪾 Unique Climate

  • “35 Days of Rain a Month”: A local saying that humorously describes the island’s heavy rainfall. This abundant moisture nourishes its spectacular waterfalls and dense forests.
  • Diverse Landscapes: Beyond forests, Yakushima features natural seaside hot springs (such as Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen) and beaches where sea turtles lay their eggs.

🍃 Why Can Yakusugi Live for Thousands of Years?

  • High Resin Content: Due to constant rainfall, Yakusugi has evolved to contain 5–6 times more resin than typical cedar, providing exceptional resistance to decay and insects.
  • Slow Growth: The island’s nutrient-poor, granite-rich soil causes extremely slow growth, resulting in dense, durable wood that resists deterioration over time.

Inspired by our love for Yakushima, we carefully curate unique local pieces to share the island’s natural beauty with you.

This collection draws inspiration from ancient forests, transforming elements such as trees, mountains, and forest spirits into handcrafted wooden carvings. Each piece is meticulously carved by artisans, preserving the natural grain and texture of the wood—showcasing its purity and vitality.

More than decorative objects, these creations embody the spirit of the forest—symbolizing protection, companionship, and the cycle of life. Whether placed at home, in the office, or given as a gift, they bring a sense of tranquility and blessings from nature.
