“Connecting people with nature, sharing fragrance and kindness.”
Originating from Yakushima, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in Japan, only cedar trees over 1,000 years old on the island are known as “Yakusugi.”
Mokutsuyu essential oils are carefully distilled by artisans using a unique method from Yakusugi wood. For example, the “New Moon Yakusugi Essential Oil” requires 100 kg of raw wood to produce just 30 ml of oil—resulting in a rich, deep cedar aroma. As the harvesting of Yakusugi is now prohibited by the Japanese government, Mokutsuyu uses wood that was felled 400–500 years ago or naturally fallen.
Even after resting in the forest for centuries, the wood remains remarkably intact and can still yield high-quality essential oils. With logging restrictions in place, the supply of Yakusugi suitable for distillation continues to decline, making these essential oils increasingly rare.
