紀州黃玉 KISHU Yellowstone

In ancient Japan, it was believed that keeping “red stones” from the Kii River (Kino-gawa) nearby or wearing them on one’s person had the power to ward off evil spirits and keep demons at bay. This “topaz” is the counterpart to the red stone.
Stones from the Kii River generally contain large amounts of iron; when the iron is fully oxidized, it takes on a vivid red color, while the yellow hue represents an intermediate stage in that oxidation process. Because the geological environments of the Kii River and the Yoshino River feature high temperatures and high pressure—conditions ideal for forming Akaiishi or Huangyu with high Mohs hardness—similar stones can also be found in neighboring Nara Prefecture.

This stone boasts a rich variety of colors, displaying a wide range of hues including green, white, and yellow. This is primarily because its matrix consists of chlorite and epidote, which contain iron oxide; depending on the rate of oxidation and the passage of time, it exhibits strikingly different and captivating hues. The white color, in particular, is formed by the presence of large amounts of quartz resulting from hydrothermal activity. In recent years, due to factors such as the Kinoshikawa River bank reinforcement project, the original mining site has been filled in. Consequently, all stones currently available on the market are precious, out-of-production stocks left over from past mining operations.

Symbolic Meaning: Warding off evil spirits (protection against evil), guardian stone, ancient sun stone
