The *Sutra of the Unfailing Net Dharani* describes the method for crafting statues of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva: “They may be made of wood, such as white sandalwood, red sandalwood, sandalwood, or celestial wood.” Sandalwood is a type of sandalwood; using sandalwood beads for the mala of this Medicine Buddha and the Twelve Guardian Deities is highly appropriate. Paired with citrine, it symbolizes the acquisition of wealth. According to the *Sutra on the Original Vows and Merits of the Medicine Buddha*, the Medicine Buddha’s entire body is translucent and blue like lapis lazuli. Pure and untainted, he emits a radiance that dispels the darkness of the Three Realms and extends throughout the Great Thousand-World System; thus, “Lapis Lazuli Light” is his title of merit. The Pure Lapis Lazuli World, which he has attained and presides over, is likewise filled with the pure light of lapis lazuli.
The sutra records that Shakyamuni Buddha told Manjushri Bodhisattva: “If one has any aspirations, by reciting this with a sincere heart, one will attain freedom from illness and a long life…” In addition to health and longevity, one may also attain wealth and honor in this very life, with all needs fulfilled.
While practicing the Bodhisattva path in his previous lives, the Medicine Buddha vowed to fulfill twelve great vows, aspiring to relieve sentient beings of the physical and mental suffering caused by inner ignorance. One of the meanings of the “Medicine” in the Medicine Buddha’s title is to heal the bodies and minds of sentient beings, enabling them to attain joy and freedom, escape the cycle of rebirth, and achieve liberation.
The pure lapis lazuli light of the Medicine Buddha burns brightly, manifesting both worldly and transcendental illumination. Shakyamuni Buddha encourages sentient beings of faith to be reborn in the Medicine Buddha’s Pure Lapis Lazuli Pure Land. The sutra states, “All virtuous men and women of faith should aspire to be reborn in that Buddha’s world.”
The Twelve Great Generals, also known as the Twelve Yakṣa Generals and commonly referred to as the Twelve Divine Generals, are guardian deities in Buddhism. They are primarily described in the *Medicine Buddha Sutra* as the twelve great generals who protect sentient beings practicing the Medicine Buddha Dharma. Each of the Twelve Great Generals is accompanied by seven thousand yakṣas as their retinue, totaling eighty-four thousand yakṣa protectors who safeguard sentient beings practicing the Medicine Buddha’s teachings and the Dharma throughout the world. Han Chinese Buddhism also associates the Twelve Great Generals with the Twelve Zodiac Animals, regarding them as incarnations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
