This is a famous unique stone found in the Niyodo River in Kochi Prefecture. The Niyodo River is hailed as “Japan’s Finest Clear Stream”; its waters are beautiful and exceptionally clear, earning it the nickname “Niyodo Blue.” The five-colored stones collected in this river basin are widely used as indoor decorations or garden ornaments (garden stones). Although a wide variety of colorful minerals—such as Arknite, Solomonite, and quartz—are commonly found throughout the Shikoku region of Japan, this Five-Color Stone is a rare and prized specimen that can only be found in a very limited number of specific areas, such as Goshiki-hama on Awaji Island, where all five colors are gathered in a single location. When these five-colored pebbles (gravel) are cemented together to form a rock, they are called “Goshiki Sazare-ishi” (Five-Color Pebbles). Currently, mining is strictly prohibited by law in all of these source areas, making it virtually impossible to collect them.
Symbolic Meaning: Purification, warding off evil spirits and misfortune (protection against disasters and misfortune)
