Roku Koyama

The six coniferous tree species found on Mount Kōya—cedar, cypress, spruce, Japanese larch, red pine, and Kōya cypress—are known as the “Six Trees of Kōya.” These trees are particularly important as building materials for temples, and Kūkai (Kōbō-daishi) once utilized them as part of Mount Kōya’s reconstruction efforts, such as raising funds through the sale of timber. The Six Trees of Kōya, sourced from natural forests, are considered not only aesthetically pleasing but also to offer multiple protective benefits.
