Akabosa Stone

Akibosa stone is a type of andesite formed approximately 400,000 years ago when lava from the Hakone volcano erupted and flowed into the sea, where it cooled rapidly. Although soft, this stone is resistant to weathering and is strong and durable. It is said that the stone turns red due to the oxidation of the iron it contains; it also exhibits various changes and develops a richer texture depending on the person who possesses it and its surroundings.
