Black Persimmon

Black persimmon wood has long been renowned as “Tokugawa Ieyasu’s favorite wood,” as exemplified by iconic artifacts such as the “Black Persimmon Inkstone Box.” In the past, speculation has centered on how the wood’s distinctive black grain forms, with theories suggesting it may be related to genetic inheritance, soil characteristics, microorganisms, or the influence of tannic acid (tannins).
“A Mysterious, Rare Wood Chosen from Among Ten Thousand”: It is said that, on average, only one out of every 10,000 persimmon trees in nature produces black persimmon wood, which is why it is hailed as a mythically rare and precious timber.

※ Natural wood grain is unique; the actual color and grain of the product may vary slightly.

Symbolic Meaning:
The Pursuit of Ultimate Uniqueness: The one-in-10,000 probability and its one-of-a-kind grain symbolize the pursuit of uniqueness, personal style, and exceptional individuality.
Elegant Demeanor: Cherished by generals and nobility since ancient times, it exudes a calm, reserved, and noble refinement.
Self-improvement and Transcendence: Just as trees undergo a miraculous process of self-refinement and transformation into “minerals/fossils” as they grow, black persimmon wood also symbolizes the power to continuously hone oneself, break through limits, and ascend to a higher realm.

Product Description
  • The Interplay Between Microorganisms and Elements: Research indicates that the black portions of black persimmon wood contain large amounts of organic matter and microorganisms, and these specific components have also been detected in the soil where the tree grows.
  • Formation of Biogenic Apatite: In the white regions of the black persimmon tree’s roots, microorganisms—primarily “cocci”—absorb elements such as calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and chlorine (Cl) from the soil and form “biogenic apatite” (a biogenic mineral) within the plant.
  • “Fossilization” of Living Trees: As the tree grows, it continues to absorb these elements, causing its tissues to darken. Over the course of many years, black striated patterns (the extremely rare “peacock grain”) form in the sapwood (outer tissue) of the trunk, while simultaneously creating “silicified wood” (plant fossils). This study has successfully demonstrated this remarkable process of mineralization.
