八女石 YAME Stone

Yame Stone is one of the famous unique stones found in the areas of Yamauchi in Yame City, Kamiyo Town, and Kuroki Town in Yame District, Fukuoka Prefecture.
It consists of deposits formed by pyroclastic flows (volcanic debris flows) during the eruption of Mount Aso approximately 70,000 years ago, intermixed with lens-shaped yellow pumice and black obsidian. The pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso at that time were of such immense scale that they even crossed the Shimabara Peninsula and the Amakusa Strait, spreading all the way to the Ube region of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The present-day Aso caldera was formed by this massive eruption.

Yame Stone is characterized by its relatively soft texture, ease of carving, light weight, and excellent resistance to both heat and cold. It is widely used in the production of stone pagodas, stone sculptures, Buddhist statues, and stone lanterns, with “Yame Stone Lanterns” being particularly renowned. The stone’s hardness and color vary depending on the specific stratum from which it is quarried. The origin of the place name “Yame” comes from the goddess “Yame-tsu-hime,” who appears in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan).
