Yame Stone

One of the gemstones produced in the Yamauchi area of Kuroki Town and Joyo Town in Yame District, Fukuoka Prefecture, Yame Stone is composed of sediments from the Aso volcanic debris flow that occurred approximately 70,000 years ago. It contains lens-shaped yellow pumice and black obsidian. Yame Stone is soft and easy to carve, lightweight, and possesses excellent heat and cold resistance. Each layer collected varies in hardness and color. The name “YAME” derives from Yametsuhime, a goddess featured in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan).
