This raw stone originates from the “Land of Izumo”—a place inextricably linked to Japan’s creation myth and mythology—which is the sacred land ruled by the deity Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto. In Japanese folk belief, Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto is often regarded as one and the same with Daikokuten (Daikoku-sama), the deity who brings wealth. According to the *Kojiki*, the ancient Izumo Grand Shrine was vast and so tall it reached into the clouds; modern archaeological and geological surveys suggest that its main hall is said to have reached an astonishing height of 48 meters at that time. This is one of the great mysteries of ancient Japanese history, giving rise to the legend that Izumo once harbored a powerful political entity independent of the Yamato royal authority.
This particular stone was collected in Miyauchi-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, and belongs to a type of “tuffaceous sandstone” formed approximately 14 million years ago. During the Edo period, the local Matsue Domain even classified it as a precious, controlled resource strictly prohibited from being transported outside the domain. Furthermore, this Izumo stone was used extensively in the construction of the stone walls of “Matsue Castle,” a National Treasure of Japan, making it an ancient, renowned stone of immense historical and cultural value. It originally appears as a bluish-gray (bluish-white) color, but mysteriously, as time passes and it is worn and handled, it gradually transforms into a rustic yellow hue. Furthermore, ancient fossils are often miraculously encased within this stone.
