出雲黑松

TThe black pine (Kromatsu) is the prefectural tree of Shimane Prefecture, Japan.
The region of Izumo is not only famous for the renowned “Izumo Taisha” shrine, but it also serves as the setting for stories such as “The White Rabbit of Inaba” and “Ōkuninushi’s Cession of the Country” (the Myth of the Cession of the Country) in the Japanese mythological texts *Kojiki* and *Nihon Shoki*.
It is a sacred site steeped in mystery and inextricably linked to Japan’s ancient history.
It is said that black pine must grow for at least 100 years before it can be used as lumber. This is because only the central “heartwood” of the black pine is usable; the outer “sapwood,” which is white in color, is too soft and has a high moisture content, making it highly susceptible to mold.
In recent years, due to infestations by the pine wood nematode (pine borer) and the effects of salt damage, the number of black pine logs has been rapidly declining. It has now become an extremely difficult-to-obtain, highly prized, and rare wood.
