Kokeshi dolls are crafted from raw wood dried by the northern winds; the wood is carved into a round shape, then sanded, painted, and assembled. The creation of a single kokeshi doll requires dozens of steps, all made possible by the skilled craftsmanship of the artisans.
The wood used for Usaburo Kokeshi—such as Japanese white birch, chestnut, beech, and cherry—is sourced from the forests of Gunma Prefecture. Using mature trees promotes forest regeneration and allows us to make a small contribution to a healthy forest cycle.
From traditional “little sister” hairstyles to palm-sized figures in various designs, these pieces can be used as seasonal decorations or gifts. Transcending the boundaries of traditional wood carvings, they offer a fresh perspective and serve as crafts that add color to daily life. Usaburo’s Grandchild Wood Carvings will continue to uphold this philosophy, pouring their technical expertise and sincerity into creating wood carvings that blend tradition with innovation.
