“Tamo”: Refers to ancient timber that has been buried underground, in riverbeds, or in volcanic ash due to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions, and has formed over hundreds to thousands of years, or even longer.
Origin of the Name “Jindai”
“Jindai” means “mythological era” or “ancient times.” In the Japanese timber industry, natural wood that has been buried for hundreds to thousands of years or more is collectively referred to as “Jindai wood.”
The greatest appeal of Jindai wood lies in the fact that no two pieces of wood have exactly the same color.
Origin: Common sources include Hokkaido, the Tohoku region, areas of volcanic activity, and sites excavated during river improvement projects.
Jindai wood is mostly discovered by chance during road construction, river engineering, or land development projects. It is not a material that is cultivated artificially or available on a consistent basis.
The depth of its color depends on: the duration of burial; minerals in the soil layers; volcanic ash composition; and the groundwater environment.
