Mount Shaka is one of Japan’s Seven Sacred Mountains, with an elevation of 1,799.5 meters. According to legend, this mountain is a sacred peak where “Shakyamuni Buddha” resided. It is now part of a national park, so, in principle, the direct extraction and removal of raw stones are strictly prohibited. However, this Ise stone was carried down the mountain by rivers and eventually collected from local rivers in Mie Prefecture.
It bears a striking resemblance to the famous Bad Gastein ore from Austria and is rich in radium, making it a “medicinal stone” that emits radon gas. It is said that the level of trace radiation it emits is considered the “strongest” among granite-type minerals. Even more astonishing is that in 2014, scientists discovered a new mineral in this stone for the first time, named “Magnesiorowlandite-(Y),” which has made it exceptionally attractive for mineralogical collection and research. Furthermore, the Ise Grand Shrine—the most revered shrine in all of Japan, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami—is located approximately 100 kilometers south of this production site.
Symbolic Meaning: Shakyamuni Buddha (Buddha’s protection / universal illumination), health, warding off evil and misfortune (Eharai)
